The International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) Conference with the theme of “Bridges and Structures Sustainability – Seeking Intelligent Solutions” was held at Dongfang Hotel, Guangzhou, China last May 8-11, 2016,. The 22nd National Conference of Bridge Engineering of China was also held simultaneously in the said event.

Kristian Lawrence Caringal, BSMS CIV student and DOST-ERDT scholar, presented a technical paper co-authored with his adviser, Dr. Andres Winston Oreta entitled “Numerical Investigation on the Effects of Local Damage to the Dynamic Properties of Buildings Using Limited Vibration Data” under the parallel session on Intelligent Solutions – Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) at the IABSE Conference. The paper discussed how to use data from accelerometers installed in a building to provide an estimate of the condition of a structure at any point in time.

A technical visit was also included in the 4-day program of the conference. Caringal joined the participants as they visited the Hong Kong – Zhuhai – Macao Bridge (HZMB). It connects Hong Kong on the east bank of the Pearl River Delta to Zhuhai and Macao on the west bank. The project is about 55 km in total length, with a main bridge of 29.6 km, including 22.9 km in bridges, 6.7 km in immersed tube tunnels, and 1.25 km in artificial islands. The conference trip was supported by ERDT.
