26 May 2018. Nagoya University Civil Engineering alumni led by Dr. Andres Winston Oreta (NUAL-PH secretary) with organizing members, Sherry Valenzuela (NUAL-PH Asst. Treasurer) and John Jowhell Villegas organized the research forum and information session on “Civil Engineers at the Forefront of Infrastructure Development” on May 26, 2018 from 9:00 – 11:30 AM with the DLSU Civil Engineering Department as host institution.
 
The participants were welcomed by Dr. Lessandro Garciano, Chair of DLSU Civil Engineering Department. Prof. Andres Oreta served as emcee during the first part of the program. The first part of the program is the Research Forum and Technical Presentations on Civil & Environmental Engineering which is summarized below:

  • Video: A Tour of Nagoya University and Nagoya City – Rodolfo Mendoza, PhD Student, Nagoya U (2016 to 2018)
  • Effective use of dredged soil for the infrastructure development of Subic Bay - Jomel M. Libut Jomel M. Libut (M. Eng., Nagoya Univ, 2013; Project Development Officer IV, Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority)
  • Effects and Processes of Land Use/Cover Change to Flood Damages in Marikina River Basin, Philippines - Jomar Paul B. Romero (M. Eng., Nagoya Univ, 2017; Engineer II, Department of Public Works and Highways - National Capital Region)
  • Functionality assessment of median turn lane pavement markings inside urban signalized intersections - John Jowhell H. Villegas (M. Eng., Nagoya Univ, 2017; Engineer III, Department of Public Works and Highways - Bureau of Quality and Safety)
  • Video: Estimation of Strain Parameter-Triggering Liquefaction Using Non-Contact Measurement  - Erica Elice S. Uy (Researcher, Nagoya Univ, 2017-2018; PhD Candidate, DLSU, 2018)

The second part features Prof. Hikaru Nakamura, Head of the Concrete Laboratory, Dept. of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Nagoya University, Japan. Engr. Jowhel Villegas served as emcee. Prof. Nakamura, first delivered a keynote lecture on “Crack Propagation due to Rebar Corrosion and Non-destructive Tests to Detect the Crack.” Then Prof. Nakamura conducted the information session on “Nagoya University Forefront Studies Program on CEE Towards Co-Development of Asia and Japan (Master & Doctoral Degrees).”

There were a total of 28 participants including the speakers and organizers. The participants came from the Dept. of Public Works and Highways, various universities like University of Rizal, FEU Tech, Holy Angel University and DLSU and construction & consulting firms. The NUAL-PH alumni who attended were Dr. Renan Tanhueco, Dr. Neil Tan Gana, Dr. Masahiro Nishimura (Japanese alumnus of the NU Concrete Lab, now in the Philippines with ADB), the NUAL-PH speakers – Prof. Nakamura, Engr. Libut, Engr. Romero & Engr. Villegas) and the NUAL-PH officers – Dr. Oreta and Engr. Valenzuela.

DLSU is top performing school in May 2018 Board Exam

The Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC) announced the official results of the May 2018 Civil Engineering Board Exams four workings days after the last day of the exams held on May 6-7, 2018. De La Salle University - Manila is the top performing school (50 examinees or more with at least 80% passing) with an over-all percentage passing of 88.14% (104 passers from a total of 118 examinees). For the first timers, 101 out of 110 (91.82%) passed. For repeaters, 3 out 8 (37.5%) passed.

The national passing is 36.03% (2,738 passers from a total of 7,599 examinees) from a total of 251 CE schools.
