Dr. Danilo C. Terante - A Tribute

Dr. Danilo C. Terante, Associate Professor and Head of the Hydraulics and Water  Resources Division of Civil Engineering Department passed away on August 16, 2015 early morning. May he rest in peace.

Dr. Dani has served DLSU as a faculty member of Engineering Sciences and Civil Engineering. He was one of the first instructors in CE Department.
"It is not how much you do, but how much love you put in the doing."

Dr. Terante is the Department's most active member of the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineering (PICE). He served PICE for several years as a director, PICE student affairs coordinator and resource speaker in CPE seminars and conventions. "When you are a civil engineer, there are a lot of OMG & WTF moments, but it's the LOL and :-) moments that makes it worthwhile."

Sir Dani as the students call him handled courses in Mathematics, Mechanics, Research Methods, Fluid Mechanics, Hydrology, Hydraulics and HWR specialized courses. "A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination, and isntill a love of learning." - Brad Henry

Dr. Terante as a service awardee (30 years). "“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” ― Mahatma Gandhi

In the span of more than 30 years, Dr. Terante has attended the University graduation to witness his students on stage getting their diploma."Hindi lahat ng pogi nag-aartista, yung iba nag-sisibil engineer!"

Ongpeng, now on the 2nd year as RONPAKU Scholar

Fiscal year 2014-2015 is the second year for Asst. Prof. Jason Ongpeng, CE Dept. chair in the JSPS Ronpaku Scholarship Program. The scholarship program is aimed to provide tutorial and financial support for promising researchers who wish to obtain their PhD degrees from Japanese universities through submission of a dissertation without matriculating a doctoral course. In this program, the Ronpaku fellow can visit the host university in Japan for short visits to do experiments and go back to Philippine university for the analysis of data and writing of dissertation. The program is funded for three years until the completion of the final requirements.

There are two advisers in the JSPS Ronpaku Scholarship Program, one in Japan and the other one in the home institution where the Ronpaku fellow resides and work. The host university in Japan, Professor Sohichi Hirose is from Tokyo Institute of Technology under the Department of Mechanical and Environmental Informatics. He is the current president of Japanese Society for Non-destructive Inspection (JSNDI), expert in the field of applied mechanics and non-destructive evaluation. The home adviser at DLSU is Dr. Andres Oreta, a professor in DLSU Civil Engineering Department, who was also Ongpeng's MSCE thesis adviser.

 

Ongpeng was in Japan for  25 days during the month of April/May to do experiments on acoustic emission test and non-linear ultrasonic test in different type of concrete when it is subjected to compressive load. Coincidentally, he also presented a conference paper, “Non-linear ultrasonic test for fiber-reinforced concrete using 3^rd harmonic generation” in Nara, Japan under the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) with the theme ELEGANCE IN STRUCTURES held on may 13-15, 2015.

DLSU Alumni scholars complete graduate degrees at Chulalongkorn University

Three Lasallian Civil Engineers namely, Marcus Kyle Baron, Janine Faustino, and Mervyn Jan Malvar recently completed their Master’s degree in Civil Engineering at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand. Last June 2013, the three alumni were awarded full scholarships by the ASEAN University Network / Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network (AUN/SEED-Net) for their chosen two-year program (Read related blog). The AUN/SEED-Net is supported and funded by the Japanese Government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

They finished their Master’s degree in various specialized fields of civil engineering. Their respective specializations and thesis topics are as follows:

•  Marcus Kyle Baron, M.Eng – Transportation Engineering; “Travel Behavior and Responses to Change in Transit Fare: A Comparative Study of Urban Rail Passengers between Bangkok and Manila”
•  Janine Faustino, M.Eng – Geotechnical Engineering; “Pile Load Distribution Behavior of Pile Group Foundations subjected to Combined Vertical Load and Moment”
• Mervyn Jan Malvar, M.Eng – Construction Engineering and Management; “Implementing Building Information Modeling (BIM) for Construction Risk Management in Design-Build Projects”

Prior to fulfilling their Master’s degree, they were required to complete 36 units (24 units for coursework, 12 units for thesis). They have also written papers which were published and presented in international proceedings and conferences.  Aside from their academic contributions in the field of civil engineering, they have also contributed to society by gathering relevant information and helping solve problems through their respective researches. The program also let them expand their networks through the diversity they’ve experienced, especially with other ASEAN nationalities.

Today, the three alumni are back in the Philippines to pursue their careers. Engr. Faustino and Engr. Malvar are currently looking for opportunities to use their respective specializations in the industry, whereas Engr. Baron will become a member of the DLSU Civil Engineering faculty in Term 1, AY 2015-2016. All have finished their requirements and are set to graduate on October 8-9, 2015.

The two deaprtments of civil engineering of DLSU and CU have a student exchange program held annually during the summer break. This is one reason why there is an increasing number of alumni  enrolling at Chulalongkorn University. Presently, there is one Lasallian scholar namely Engr. Paolo Ian Lucero, at CU Civil Engineering Department.
