The CE Specialization Congress 2014

The Civil Engineering Society (CES) together with the Junior Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers – Lungsod ng Maynila Chapter held its annual Specialization Congress last August 16, 2014 at the Natividad Fajardo Auditorium, DLSU, Manila. The aim of the Specialization was to introduce the CE students to the different specializations in the field – Structural Engineering (STE), Construction Management & Engineering (CTM), Transportation Engineering (TRE), and Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering (HWR). Four resource speaker namely, Mr. Raymond Abad (TRE), Dr. Angel Lazaro III (STE), Engr. Alberto Romualdez (CTM) and Engr. Noriel Ortigas (HWR), from the industry were invited to present the scope, relevance, and job opportunities of their various specializations. 

Dr. Angel Lazaro III, a pioneer of the BSCE in DLSU and past Dean of the former College of Engineering, as he delivered his speech on Structural Engineering.  Dr. Lazaro did not only impress the audience with his credentials but also with his informative presentation.

Engr. Noriel Ortigas of PICE, as he delivered his talk on HWR.  Engr. Ortigas stressed the importance of Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering by relating it with the other specializations.

Engr. Alberto Romualdez, graduate of DLSU Batch ’99, as he presented on Construction Technology and Management. Not only did Engr. Romualdez emphasize the significance of CTM but he also imparted beneficial pieces of advice to students about to take up specialized courses.

 

Mr. Raymond Abad, graduated magna cum laude from De La Salle University, was the Transportation Engineering resource speaker.  In his presentation, Mr. Abad was able to highlight the need for transportation engineers in the country.

The congress was attended by 192 students from the 13 participating schools of JPICE-LNM – Adamson University, De La Salle University, Eulogio Amang Rodrigues Institute of Science and Technology, Far Eastern University Institute of Technology, FEATI University, Mapua Institute of Technology, National University, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Technological Institute of the Philippines, Technological University of the Philippines, University of the East, University of Santo Tomas.

XU's Engr. Lo, Guest Speaker at Grad Forum on DRR & Infrastructure Dev't (DRRID)

The Department of Civil Engineering, De La Salle University-Manila held a Graduate Forum on Disaster Risk Reduction and Infrastructure Development (DRRID) on August 23, 2014 at 8:30 AM – 4:30

PM at the European Documentation Center Room 13th floor Henry Sy Building. The forum is the culminating activity of the CIV680M/D Graduate Seminar on DRRID wherein each student presented his/her seminar paper related to the course. Attending the forum are graduate students and the faculty. The CIV680M/D course is facilitated by Dr. Andres Oreta and Dr. Lessandro Garciano with the cooperation of Dr. Renan Tanhueco. Resource speakers in this seminar include CE PhD faculty members and  various experts from the industry and academe (List of resource speakers posted earlier).

Engr. Dexter S. Lo, Director/Assistant Professor of the Xavier University Engineering Resource Center (XU ERC) of Xavier University - Ateneo de Cagayan was the keynote speaker of the forum. The keynote lecture of Engr. Lo entitled "Even Without the Storm: The XU DRRM Story" was inspiring as he narrates his personal experiences starting with a simple and basic research on risk assessment (part of which was his MS thesis at DLSU) in one barangay and which evolved to various DRRM activities and projects which earned awards and funding from several organizations.

The seminar paper which is the final requirement of the course is an original paper on a selected topic that addresses the issue of development and disasters and the role of civil engineers in disaster risk mitigation. The papers are products of the students' analysis of DRR data, issues and lessons from past disasters. The papers presented were:

DLSU Undergraduate Retrofitting Research wins Best Poster at 3ERDT

The 3rd ERDT Congress, hosted by the Department of Science and Technology, Science Education Institute, and the Engineering Research and Development for Technology (ERDT), in partnership with the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research Development was held last July 25, 2014 at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City, Philippines. This year’s theme, “Science and Technology for Disaster Preparedness and Resiliency” was set on the heels of recent natural disasters that claimed thousands of lives and left many without homes and livelihood in the Philippines.

A special award was presented during the awarding ceremonies and among all participants, the Best Poster that conforms to the theme “Science and Technology for Disaster Preparedness and Resiliency” was awarded to the research of Kenneth Roi P. Toral (ERDT Scholar) and the rest of Team T-EPT; Andrew Dustin L. Grimares, Mikael S. Peñamante, and Janina Rosario S.J. Roxas, under the supervision of their adviser Dr. Bernardo A. Lejano from the Civil Engineering Department of DLSU.

The research of Team T-EPT was entitled “Structural Retrofitting of Reinforced Concrete Beams Using Turnbuckle - Exterior Post Tensioning”, presenting an innovative way of retrofitting and strengthening reinforced concrete structures. Their research concluded that the Turnbuckle - Exterior Post Tensioning (T-EPT) was effective in improving the serviceability condition, load carrying capacity, and seismic integrity of structures. As an innovative retrofitting method, the research was helpful in making seismic-prepared structures which could save the lives of many people. As Dr. Renato Solidum said, “Earthquakes don’t kill, buildings do”. With that, the T-EPT could prevent buildings from becoming deadly during disasters, making it a research that contributes to disaster preparedness and resiliency of structures.  

There were 59 research poster entries from participating schools - University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, Central Luzon State University, De La Salle University, Mapúa Institute of Technology, Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology, and University of San Carlos.
