DLSU CE Faculty joins EnHERIT 2021

The International Conference on Engineering Heritage and Existing Structures (EnHerit 2021) offers some of the world's most accomplished practitioners in heritage. The Day 1 of the EnHERIT 2021 Conference was concluded last August 07, 2021 (Saturday), while Day 2 will be on August 14, 2021 (Saturday).

The first Enherit was organized in 2019, hosted by DLSU GCOE Department of Civil Engineering in collaboration with San Sebastian Basilica Conservation and Development Foundation.

This year's EnHERIT is jointly organized by Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines, Inc. - ASEP, BAKAS PILIPINAS | Philippine Historic Preservation Society, De La Salle University and International Council on Monuments and Sites - Icomos Philippines.

Many of the DLSU CE Department Faculty Members were involved in the conference, they took part and will be part of the EnHERIT 2021 Program.

DLSU CE Faculty and students participated at the 2nd International Conference on Concrete And Steel Technology, Engineering and Design (CASTED2020)which banners the theme, “Casted in Concrete and Steel for Resiliency and Sustainability,” a virtual conference hosted by the Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines (ASEP) and supported by the Philippine Group of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), held on October 22-24, 2020 via Zoom and Stream Yard platform.

Dr. Lessandro Garciano (Prof., ASEP Tresurer) served as over-all  CASTED2020 conference vice-chair. Dr. Rodolfo Mendoza, Jr. (Assoc Prof. Lecturer, ASEP Director) served as chair of the CASTED2020 Technical Committee with Dr. Andres Oreta (Prof, ASEP Fellow) as Vice Chair. Members of the various committees are Dr. Bernardo Lejano (Prof),  Engr. Adam Abinales (Prof. Lecturer) and Engr. Erick Sison (Prof. Lecturer). Garciano, Mendoza, Abinales,  Sison and Oreta also served a session chairs in the keynote sessions of the conference.

ChiChi20 International Conference 2019

DLSU professors, Dr. Andres Oreta and Dr. Lessandro Garciano (CE Dept. chair) and professional lecturers, Adam Abinales and Erick Sison attended the International Conference in Commemoration of 20th Anniversary of the 1999 Chi-Chi Earthquake at Taipei, Taiwan held on September 15-19, 2019. 

Prof. Oreta and Engr. Abinales were invited to give talks in parallel sessions of the conference. Prof. Oreta delivered a paper co-authored with Engr. Adrian Frederick Sy on "Development of a Brief Code-Based Seismic Diagnostic Tool for Existing RC Buildings Considering Vertical Irregularities" on Sept. 18. Engr. Abinales, on the other hand gave a talk on "The Project SAM: Development of Probabilistic Seismic Ground Motion Hazard Map for the Entire Philippines" on Sept 16.

Prof. Garciano also presented a paper co-authored with Abraham Matthew S. Carandang and Osamu Maruyama in one parallel session where he also served as session chair on "Quantifying a Resilience Index of a Water Distribution Network (WDN) using an Optimal Restoration Strategy" on Sept 18.

The Philippine delegation in the conference are mostly officers and members of the Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines, Inc. (ASEP). ASEP has a strong cooperative relationship with Taiwan's National Center for Research in Earthquake Engineering (NCREE) especially in organizing international conferences. NCREE has supported ASEP varioous conferences including the ASIA Conference in Earthquake Engineering (ACEE) and in the coming SHAKE International Conference this November 14-16, 2019.

Fillone & Oreta at CECAR8 - Tokyo

Prof. Alexis Fillone and Prof. Andy Oreta attended and presented papers at the 8th Civil Engineering Conference in the Asian Region (CECAR8) held on April 16-19, 2019 at Tokyo, Japan. CECAR is a major activity of ACECC (The Asian Civil Engineering Coordinating Council) held on a triennial basis, and started in 1998 (http://www.cecar8.jp/about/). ACECC (http://www.acecc-world.org/) was established in 1999 with the aim of promoting the acquisition and transfer of civil engineering knowledge for advancing the design and construction practices that ultimately improve the quality of life of all citizens from ACECC member countries. ACECC is currently comprised of member societies from 13 countries (Australia, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Indonesia, Japan, S. Korea, Mongolia, Pakistan, Philippines, Taiwan, USA, and Vietnam). Among the organizers of CECAR are the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE), Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE) and the Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE).  CECAR8 is organized by JSCE. 

Prof. Fillone presented his paper on "The impact of truck lane on vehicular flow along an arterial road in Metro Manila". Prof. Oreta presented a paper co-authored with Kevin Lawrence Atienza, Carla Maria Gonzalez, Jorge Jason Juaquino and Maria Krisia Martinez on “Quantifying the Environmental Impacts of Structural Elements of Standard Bridge Design." 

Some insights from the CECAR8:

"I have learned the future directions of civil engineering in the Asian Region. Among the topics emphasized in the sessions I attended are how civil engineering can address the Sustainable Development Goals. Another interesting topic is related to initiatives on recycling of construction and demolition waste. The exhibits also introduced me to new technologies such as the “floatless method” for reducing damage of utility holes due to liquefaction. Another exhitbit is on the Disaster Prevention Portal specifically designed for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The solar heat-blocking pavement is another product that may be appropriate in the Philippines." - AWC Oreta

DLSU CE Faculty - Prof. Andres Oreta and part-time lecturer, Dr. Joseph Juanzon presented papers at the 7^th International Conference on Building Resilience (7ICBR) held on November 26-29, 2017 in Bangkok, Thailand. On Nov. 27, 2017, Dr. Joseph Juanzon presented the paper on  “An assessment on the effective preparedness and disaster response: The case of Santa Rosa City, Laguna" while Prof. Oreta presented the paper co-authored with  Engr. Rizalyn Illumin  on “A Post-Disaster Functional Asset Value Index for School Buildings.”

The conference is also part of the activities under the URCO RPW on Building Resilient Cities & Communities. Hence, on November 28, 2017, a meeting with  UK partners in the Newton Fund Research Links was held. Dr. Jose Edgar Mutuc (IE Dept) and Prof. Oreta met Prof. Dilanthi Amaratungga, Prof. Richard Haigh and Dr. Ezri Hayat University of Huddersfield University to discuss the incoming workshop on January 22-26, 2018 which will be held in Manila with DLSU as host university.

Incidentally, Murphy Mohammed, a recent MSCE graduate of DLSU under the CHED Offshore Program at St. Louis University presented also two papers in the conference. Dr. Jose Edgar Mutuc and his advisee, M. Guttierrez also presented two papers.

The papers presented in the 7ICBR will be published in the Scopus-indexed Procedia Engineering.

Dr. Oreta also met Prof. Naveed Anwar of the Asian Institute of Technology on Nov. 27, 2017 to discuss the 7th Asia Conference on Earthquake Engineering (ACEE) to be hled in Bangkok, Thailand on November 2018. The 7ACEE is co-organized by ASEP.

Two best papers from DLSU at GEOMATE 2017

GEOMATE International Society in coordination with Japan Geotechnical Society, and Mie University Research Center for Environmental Load Reduction  organized The Seventh International Conference on Geotechnique, Construction Materials and Environment, GEOMATE 2017, on November 21 to 24, 2017 at Tsu City, Mie, Japan. The conference aims to provide an opportunity to share researches on geo-engineering, construction materials, environmental issues, water resources, and earthquake and tsunami disasters.

CE Faculty at the PICE NCR 14th Regional Technical Conference

Prof. Andres Winston C. Oreta delivered a lecture on "Learning Seismic Retrofitting Methods and Practices from Japan" at the 14th PICE NCR Regional Technical Conference held on Oct. 6-7, 2017 at the AVR, Valenzuela City Hall, Vallenzuela City. The conference, hosted by the PICE North MM Chapter with Prof. Dr. Victor Macam, Jr as president had a theme, "Civil Engineers: Serving the Nation & Sustaining Development."

Engr. Frederick Sison, CE Dept. Professional Lecturer and past president of ASEP also delivered a lecture on "Updates on the National Structural Code of the Philippines."

The conference was attended by about 200 PICE members from various MM chapters - Manila, Makati, Quezon City and East and North Metro Manila. There were 15 lectures on various topics - CPD, BIM, Codes, Retrofitting, Construction Management, Pile Dynamics, Gender Sensitivity, Transportation Engineering, Fire Technology Occupational Safety and Water Resources.

DLSU participated in the 11th SSMS and 5th RCND 2017

The recently concluded 11^th SSMS (Society for Social Management Systems) and 5^th RCND (Regional Conference on Natural Disasters) 2017 International Symposium with a theme “Managing Smart and Resilient Society” was held in Swissotel Le Concorde, Bangkok, Thailand last September 20-21, 2017 and hosted by Chulalongkorn University partnered with AUN-SEED Net. Several research studies were presented with topics that includes Disaster, Resilience and Management, IoT and Smart Cities, Environment and Security of Water, Energy and Food, Infra and Asset Planning and Management, Sustainability, among others. There were about 96 papers and 5 plenary lectures presented in this conference. 

11^th SSMS and 5^th RCND 2017 hosts and members of the organizing committee

Engr. Richard De Jesus from DLSU Civil Engineering, a RCND sponsorhip awardee, participated and presented a paper entitled “Developing a CO2 and carbonation parameters map for selected RC structures surrounding railways stations in Metro Manila”. The paper aimed to establish a CO2 map for selected areas in Manila and assessed RC structures for carbonation. The study was co-authored by RDJ’s former thesis advisees: F. Alejo, C. Biscocho, J. Patawaran, and L. Piojo.
