DLSU hosts ICEE-Phil 2016, GCOE faculty presents papers in parallel sessions

De La Salle University - Gokongwei College of Engineering (GCOE) hosted the 2nd International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEE-Phil 2016) organized by the Philippine Association of Engineering Schools, Inc. (PAES). DLSU is represented in PAES by Dean Jonathan Dungca as one of the directors. The GCOE Department chairs and former deans,  Dr. Rosemary Seva and Dr. Pag-asa Gaspillo  also attended the conference.

Papers on Engineering Education, Scholarship on Teaching and Learning, OBE and Case Studies were presented by the GCOE Faculty. CE Faculty, Prof., Dr. Andres Oreta presented his URCO SoTL Research on "Assessment of Individual and Group Problem Solving in the Course on Theory of Structures." Former Dean, Prof. Rosemay Seva presented her paper on "The Need for Human-Centered Engineering Curriculum." GCOE Quality Coordinators from ChE and ECE Departments also presented their papers related to the OBQA program of the college. Dr, Josie Borja presented in behalf of Dr. Susan Roces (ChE) about the ChE Capstone Design Course, while Dr. Gerino Mappatao (ECE) presented his paper on the use of a Case Study in one of the ECE Courses.

GCOE QA organized SoTL Seminar/Workshop

The GCOE SoTL Scholars and Resource Speakers

The GCOE QA Office and DLSU QA Office hosted a seminar/workshop on Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) for GCOE faculty on March 4, 2016 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the HSSH 4Flr Conference Room. This seminar/workshop addresses DLSU KRA 1 which is “Education that is excellence-driven and learner-centered” with the goal that “Teachers are enabled to perform more effectively as Lasallian educators. This goal is assessed based on an “incremental increase in the number of faculty members engaged in SoTL research projects.” Hence this activity was conducted to increase the awareness of selected GCOE faculty about SoTL and engage them to publish papers on engineering education and SoTL in conferences and journals. This activity enhances the GCOE OBQA program and serves as an impetus to revive the Master of Engineering Education program at GCOE and offer a PhD on Engineering Education in the future.

The seminar started with a brief presentation by Dr. Andres Oreta, GCOE QA Director about his paper related to the "Evolution of an Engineering Educator." He also presented conferences on engineering education and journals where the faculty can submit scholarly papers on SoTL. The resource person on SoTL was Dr. Raymund Sison, CCS Professor and University Fellow who introduced the SoTL framework which he proposes for DLSU and SoTL concepts. Dr. Derlie Mateo-Babiano, CE Dept. visiting professor from the University of Queensland, Australia announced Graduate Certificate and PhD opportunities in Australia.  Eight faculty members from GCOE actively participated in the seminar/workshop. The GCOE participants were:

After the seminar, a workshop was conducted wherein each participant shared his/her idea of a possible SoTL project or paper. Dr. Sison gave comments on how to improve their proposals. Interesting proposals were presented such as Innovative teaching of  Engineering Ethics and Laws by Dulay and Dela Cruz, use of virtual reality in ChE by Almendrala, Simulating a CNC machine by Musngi, Pair-wise or cooperative problem solving in Surveying by Paringit and Real-world problems in Structural Analysis by Hernando. The participants which are named as GCOE SoTL Scholars will  champion SoTL in the college and their respective departments.

7th Bridge Building Contest 2011

The Civil Engineering Society is holding the judging and testing of bridge entries for the 7th Bridge Building Competition this March, 19, 2011 at the DLSI-Manila CE CTM Laboratory. The contest is open to all undergraduate civil engineering students in the Philippines.

The contest challenges students to build a truss bridge using popsicle sticks that will be laid on two smooth supports with a span length (S) of 560 mm and can carry a minimum load of 20 kg.
The bridge must satisfy the following specifications:
  • 560 mm ≤ Length (L) ≤ 770 mm
  • Width (B) ≤ 120 mm
  • Height of Truss (H) ≤ 100 mm from the flat surface of the deck to the top
  • Depth (D) ≤ 50 mm from the support surface to the flat surface of the bridge deck
  • H + D ≤ 150 mm
  • Weight (W) ≤ 1.50 kg

Materials and Construction
a)
The bridge must be constructed using plain popsicle sticks only.
b) The popsicle sticks may be cut or sanded in any manner.
c) Only all purpose glue (white) must be used to connect the popsicle sticks.
d) No other materials must be used.
e) Do not paint, coat or stain the bridge with any foreign substance.
Category of Winners - Cash prizes will be given!
(a) AESTHETIC Design Category – one winner (Best Aesthetic Design)
(b) STIFFNESS Category – The bridge with the maximum stiffness rating score (K) at the required minimum load of 20 kg. K is computed as the ratio of the load over displacement divided by the bridge weight – Two winners (Stiffness Champion and Runner-up)
(c) STRENGTH Category – The bridge with the maximum strength rating (SR =P/W) where P is the maximum load the bridge can carry before failure and W is the bridge weight – One winner (The Strongest Bridge)

Theory of Structures Laboratory


Third year BSCE students can now perform laboratory experiments in the new course on Theory of Structures Laboratory. The course was introduced when the curriculum was revised three years ago in compliance with a CHED directive.

The Structures Models Room at V513 houses the Modular Structures Teaching Equipment and computers with structural engineering software like GRASP, SAP2000 and ETABS. The Structures Teaching Equipment were developed by Tecquipment Structures. The department purchased the equipment for performing the folowing experiments:
(a) Bending Moments in a Beam
(b) Shear Force in a Beam
(c) Deflections of Beams and Cantilevers
(d) Pin-Jointed Frameworks
(e) Frame Deflections and Reactions
(f) Unsymmetrical Bending and Shear Center

The Theory of Structures Laboratory was offered this 2nd term SY 2010-2011 under Dr. Andres Oreta. The students perfom computational work at the Structural Engineering Instructional Laboratory at V512 and perform the experiments at the adjacent V513 room. So far, the students performed experiments on finding the relationships between Moment and Load, Shear Force and Load, Deflection and Load. Experiments on the effect of a moving load on moment and shear force and the use of influence lines were also performed. Deflections of beams due to various parameters such as length, material and support conditions were also performed. Analysis of a roof truss and a portal frame will also be conducted.

The laboratory course complements the lecture class on the Theory of Structures. By conducting the experiments, the students observed the behavior of simple structural elements and verify the theory. They also learn how to analyze experimental data and apply data analysis tools such a regresssion analysis and curve fitting. They prepare laboratory reports using computer-based tools like Microsoft Word, Excel and graphic software. They also improve their teamwork since the experiments are conducted in groups. Over-all, the course enhances the teaching and learning process in understanding concepts in structural analysis.

DLSU Program on Concrete Engg presented at ASEP Conference



Dr. Bernardo Lejano presented a paper co-authored with Dr. Andres Oreta and Dr. Jonathan Dungca (CE faculty members under the Structural Engineering Division) on "Teaching and Research on Concrete in the Undergraduate Program" at a plenary session of the Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines (ASEP) Convention on Concrete Engineering Practice and Technology 2010 (A.CONCEPT'10) held at the Manila Pavilion on May 20-21, 2010.

The paper presented the courses dealing with concrete that are incorporated in DLSU Civil Engineering curriculum. These courses were then compared with those offered at other top universities such as the University of California (Berkeley). Lejano observed that the DLSU curriculum has more units offered than the UC Berkleey.

Undergraduate thesis related to concrete were also featured to illustrate that the students have developed an interest on problems related to concrete.

The strategies (lectures, experiments, projects) and experiences of the faculty and students in the concrete courses such as Reinforced Concrete Design and Concrete Laboratory were also discussed to show the effectiveness and weaknesses of the present program.

Soil Mech Field Experiment at DHVCAT

Last February 20, 2009, the third year civil engineering students together with the students of Don Honorio Ventura College of Arts and Trades (DHVCAT) conducted an experiment in Soil Mechanics, which is the determination of a Unit Weight of Soil in Place by the Sand-Cone Method (ASTM D1556). This activity is a tie-up project in connection with the Adopt-an-Eng-School Program of the CE Department and CES.

The activity started with a lecture and demonstration by Dr. Jonathan Dungca, DLSU Soil Mechanics professor and CES student, Chesca Del Castillo. The DLSU and DHVCAT students were then divided into four groups to perform the experiment. The equipment and materials such as the sand-cone apparatus, shovel, plate, bottle, Ottawa sand were provided by the DLSU CE Department. This activity is both a field trip and an alternative class for the DLSU students. Through this activity, both DLSU and DHVCAT students learned how to determine soil properties in situ. Hydraulics Laboratory Exhibits - Developing Research, Model Making and Presentation Skills

A student exhibit is an end-of-the-term project in the Hydraulics Laboratory when it was a two unit laboraotry course. These projects develop life-long learning and communication skills. Students do library, internet and field research, design their presentations and projects - posters and/or models and present orally their projects in front of a panel of judges.

In 2009, HYDRALA students, presented their projects related to the Typhoon Ondoy. Each group was assigned a  location in Metro Manila and vicinity for them to do research on the flood hazard, causes of flooding, extent of damage and recommended solutions to mitigate the flood risk. The group of Katrina Tengki and Earl De Guzman on flooding in Bulacan won the best project.





































In 2008, undergraduate students enrolled in the Hydraulics Laboratory created both working and non-working models related to Hydraulics and Water Resources (HWR) Engineering. The DLSU Civil Engineering Society (CES) sponsored a competion for the HWR models. The models were judged by the HWR professors – Dr. Danilo Terante and Dr. Renan Tanhueco and other CE Faculty Members. The 1st place winners in the competition were:
Non-Working Model: Hydro-Electric Power Plant by A. Viernes, D.J. Vidad, J. Feraer, K. Llamada, D. Llanes and E. Cheng.
Working Model: Pipe Network in a Subdivision by M. Gawaran, H. de Guia, M. Arigo and P. Adiaz.

The other working models which won 2nd and 3rd were the models on Flood Control (Flood Gates) and Overflow Spillway with Vertical Gate.
