Oreta attends PBEd-STRIDE Workshop

Dr. Andy Oreta, professor of civil engineering represented DLSU in the PBEd-STRIDE Curriculum Mapping Workshop for BS Civil Engineering on 27-28 April 2016 at The Tower Club in Makati City. There were ten invited academe representatives from DLSU, UPD, UPLB, TUP, MIT, MUST, UST, AdU, USC and BSU who participated in the workshop and provided inputs to the PBEd-STRIDE project. The objectives of the workshop were (a) to review and align the industry-defined outcomes for the civil engineering program, (b) to provide focus of instruction for faculty members, and (c) to establish a curriculum matrix between desired industry outcomes and the professional subjects.

The main output of the workshop is a matrix wherein professional subjects were identified that can address the industry-defined outcomes with respect to knowledge and ability. The industry-defined outcomes are grouped into three (A) Design  (B) Construction and (C) Basic CE Principles & Practices. The industry-defined outcomes listed below are what industry expects from a fresh CE graduate. A fresh civil engineering graduate or a newly-hired civil engineer must be able to:

A. Design
1. Interpret design specfication and criteria
2. Interpret codes
3. Interpret topographic maps
4. Interpret geotechnical reports
5. Calculate design loads
6. Analyze and design simple structures
7. Prepare basic drainage and site grading
8. Perform basic road design
9. Translate basic design to engineering sketches/preliminary drawings
10. Produce construction drawings from engineering sketches using CAD

B. Construction
1. Perform PERT-CPM for simple structures
2. Use project scheduling software
3. Prepare quantity estimates
4. Interpret project contract obligations and agreements
5. Identify construction equipment and tools
6. Identify construction materials
7. Recognize construction terminologies in the vernacular
8. Generate project S-curve on simple structures
9. Create rebar cutting list
10. Lay-out and stake simple plans
11. Distinguish common architectural finishes
12. Interpret material testing results
13. Verify actual construction works vs plans
14. Prepare accomplishment reports

C. Basic CE Principles and Practices
1. Organize project documents
2. Write technical reports
3. Read plans (i.e. architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical)
4. Implement 5S housekeeping
5. Interpret CE laws and ethics
6. Differentiate the six specializations (CTM, HWR, STE, TRE, GTE and ENV)
7. Practice basic safety

The industry-defined outcomes are very useful in upgrading the CE  curriculum especially in preparing the graduates for the real-world tasks.

DLSU CE Dept to host International Conference on CE Education

To produce globally competitive and socially responsible civil engineers is a major challenge to civil engineering (CE) schools all over the world. CE educators are now challenged to address issues such as the global mobility of professional civil engineers, outcomes-based education as a framework in the accreditation of schools, the use of new and advanced technology in the teaching and learning process in the university and the impact of collaboration and networking with international institutions and professional organizations.

The Department of Civil Engineering, De La Salle University-Manila will host the ICCEE2012 – International Conference on Civil Engineering Education Conference 2012 with the theme “Addressing Global Challenges in Civil Engineering Education” on November 9-10, 2012. This international conference will serve as a forum for CE educators, researchers, practitioners, school administrators and students to exchange information, to share lessons and to discuss strategies on how civil engineering education can be improved to produce globally competitive and socially responsible professional civil engineers.

CALL FOR PAPERS:

Participants who wish to present a paper in accordance with the theme and topics of the conference are invited to submit an abstract of about 200-300 words as a word document on or before July 16, 2012. International Conference on Outcomes-Based Teaching and Learning

DLSU GCOE faculty led by GCOE Dean Pag-asa Gaspillo, GCOE Vice Dean Efren Dela Cruz, Dr. Andres Oreta (CE), Dr. Alvin Chua (ME), and part-time faculty Dr. Manuel Belino attended the International Conference on Outcomes-Based Teaching and Learning (ICOBTL) on Feb. 16-17, 2012 at the TIP Campus in QC.

The keynote lecturers were Prof. John Biggs, educator, psychologist and author of the 'constructive alignement' and 'SOLO taxonomy" concepts and his wife and co-author, Dr. Catherine Tang. About 500 teachers, university presidents and heads of government and professional organizations attended the conference.

9th National CE Education Convention - Cebu City

Terante, Fillone, Oreta & Belino

CE Faculty members, Dr. Danilo Terante, Dr. Alexis Fillone and Dr. Andres Oreta attended the 9th National Civil Engineering Education Convention with the theme, "Moving Towards an Outcomes-Based Education" held on July 14-16, 2011 at the University of San Jose - Recolletos (USJ-R), Cebu City. The convention was organized by the Association of Civil Engineering Educators of the Philippines (ACEEP). On the first day, Dr. Fillone presented the PhD Program in Civil Engineeering which will start in 2012. He also discussed the ERDT scholarship and proposals related to the PhD program like a research-based and special (summer) programs. Dr. Oreta, on the otherhand presented a paper about the Laboratory Course in Theory of Structures at DLSU where TecQuipment Structures Modules are used in class.

The second day highlighted the lecture-workshop on Outcomes-Based Education with DLSU ME part-time faculty Dr. Manuel Belino (now Dean of ME, Mapua Tech) and Dr. Oreta as resource speakers. Dr. Belino presented about the ABET Model for OBE. Dr. Oreta, on the otherhand, presented OBE concepts for writing course learning outcomes and converting syllabi to OBE-format. Dr. Terante was a facilitator in the OBE workshops.

Dr. Terante is the current president of the ACEEP and he announced that the 10th CE Education Convention will be hosted by DLSU-Manila sometime in September 2012. Incidentally, the DLSU CE Dept. will be 25 years in 2012.
