Special Awards given to BSMS 2014 grads

Special CE Awards were given to the first batch of  BSMS graduates last July 11, 2014. Paul Bidol was recognized as the "Outstanding BSMS CE student" for his high academic performance (graduating magna cum laude) and for being selected as the best paper presentor at CSEB 2014 (Malaysia). Maria Katrina Ganzon was given the award for "Best Contribution to the CE Department" for being best presentor in two conferences in transportation engineering and having a paper accepted in an international journal. The rest of the BSMS graduates that include Dane Abranilla, Kenneth Brizuela, Raymund Abad, Arvin Yu and Kristen Roquel were given certificates for their outstanding academic performance and research outputs.

In the recent May 2014 Civil Engineering Board Exam, De La Salle University – Manila grabbed four (4) top spots and declared as the Best Performing School. With these achievements, the Civil Engineering Department spearheaded a Special Mass and Testimonial Celebration last June 27, 2014 to recognize the board exam passers and the topnotchers, the said activities were celebrated at the Pearl of Great Price Chapel and Henry Sy Roof Deck, respectively.

Plaques of Recognition were given to Engr. Victor Torres (Top 4), Engr. Isiah Paul Alvarez (Top 5), Engr. Arnel Telan (Top 6) and Engr. Syrus Gomari (Top 9). Also, Certificates of Recognition were given to all board exam passers. Topnotchers were given the opportunity to share their experiences before and after the board exam, they also thanked the Civil Engineering Department for their overwhelming generosity and support.

The first batch of the BS-MS Civil Engineering program graduated during the 170^th Commencement Exercises held last June 14, 2014 at the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila. The seven BSMS graduates also received academic awards during the ceremonies. Listed below are the BSMS graduates, the titles of their research, and the conferences they have participated in.

1.  Abad, Raymund Paolo – Cum Laude. Integrated Land and Water Transport Operations at Jordan Wharf, Guimaras. Poster presentor at the 2^nd ERDT Conference, Best Paper Presentor at 21^st TSSP Conference (Cebu, Phis), Paper presentor at 6^thATRANS Young Researchers Forum (Thailand), 10^thEASTS Conference (Taiwan), and 1^st SPACE conference (Phils).
2. Abranilla, Dane Rei–Cum Laude. St. La Salle Scholar. Strength and Compressibility of Coal Ash as Embankment Material for Land Reclamation. Poster presentor at 2^nd ERDT conference.
3.  Bidol, Paul Bryan – Magna Cum Laude. Investigation on the Influence of Coal Ash Replacement and Seawater Mixing and Curing on the Strength of Bamboo-Reinforced Concrete. Best paper presentor at CSEB 2014 conference (Malaysia)
4.  Brizuela, Kenneth –Cum Laude. St. La Salle Scholar. A Computer-Aided Seismic Hazard Risk Assessment Tool to Promote Safe School Communities. Paper presentor/author for CECAR-6 (Indonesia), EASEC-13 (Sapporo, Japan)  and 1^st SPACE Conference (Phils).
5. Ganzon, Maria Katrina – Cum Laude. Choice Analysis for Tourist Spots: The Case of Guimaras Province. Poster presentor at the 2^ndERDT conference, paper presentor at 21^st TSSP Conference (Cebu, Phils) and 10th EASTS Conference (Taiwan), and best paper presentor at the 6^thATRANS Young Researchers Forum (Thailand)..
6. Roquel, Krister Ian Daniel – Cum Laude. Mode Choice Analysis of Inter-Island Passenger Travel from Iloilo to Negros Occidental, Philippines. Poster presentor at the 2^nd ERDT Conference, best paper presentor at 21^stTSSP Conference (Cebu, Phils), paper presentor for the 6^thATRANS Young Researchers Forum (Thailand), the 10th EASTS Conference (Taiwan), and the 2014 PICE Mid-Year Convention.
7. Yu, Arvin Patrick – Jose Rizal Honors Society Member. Magna Cum Laude. Investigation of the Compressive Strength of Cold-Formed Steel C-Section. Paper presentor at CSEB 2014 conference (Malaysia)

Introduced two years ago, the BS-MS program enables qualified 3^rd year students to take their Master’s course program simultaneously with their undergraduate program. The program is designed to be completed after the student’s 5^th year of stay. Students accepted in the program were also candidates for the DOST – Engineering Research for Development and Technology (DOST-ERDT) scholarship.

DLSU STE students win at A.CONCEPT2014 poster competition

 The Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines, Inc. (ASEP) held a student research poster competition during the A.CONCEPT2014 held on May 22-24, 2014 at the Century Plaza Hotel, Manila. The two entries from DLSU CE Department won 1st place and 2nd place in the competition winning P5000.00 and P3000.00 respectively.

The wiinning poster was entitled "A Methodology for Site-Specific Wind Contouring and Hazard Mapping: A Case Study in Surigao City" by Marvin Salazar with Dr. Lessandro Garciano as adviser.

The 2nd place winner is entitled "Utilization of Perna Viridis as Patial Substitute to Cement in Concrete Mix" by Kriss Ngo, ERnesto Sarao III, Rogel Talgatag with Dr. Bernardo Lejano as adviser.

DLSU CE faculty - Assoc. Prof. Lessandro Garciano, Asst. Profs. Alden Paul Balili and Richard De Jesus presented technical papers at the ASEP Convention on Concrete Engineering, Practice and Technology (A.CONCEPT 2014) held on May 22-24, 2014 at the Century Plaza Hotel, Manila. The convention had a theme, "Extreme Loadings on Concrete Structures." The Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines, Inc. (ASEP) is the specialized professional organization in structural engineering in the Philippines. The structural engineering faculty of DLSU are members of ASEP. Some of them served also as directors of ASEP in recent years.
