Prof. Oreta: Winner of the PAES Teaching Excellence Award 2023


The Philippine Association of Engineering Schools (PAES) announced the winners of the Teaching Excellence Award (TEA) 2023 on Nov. 10, 2023 during the  International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEE-Phil 2023) held at UP Los Banos. 

Dr. Andres Winston C. Oreta, Full Professor of DLSU Dept. of Civil Engineering was announced as the winner among the finalists of the Teaching Excellence Award (TEA) 2023 for the senior category. The criteria for the selection of the finalist and winner of the awards are: 

  1. Instructional Competence and Teaching Effectiveness (70%) - Educational Attainment and Professional Advancement (10%), Instructional Materials Produced for past 10 years (10%), Engg Education papers (10%), Teaching Performance (20%) and Teaching Demo (20%). 
  2. Personal Qualities and Character (20%) - Model of ethical and professional behavior in public/private life (10%) and Good human relations in the school/community (10%), and
  3. Professional and Community Involvement (10%) - Prof Org related to teaching (5%) and Participation in Community Service (5%)

Meanwhile, Paolo Lucero Asst. Professor of DCE was a finalist of the TEA (Junior Category). The winner for this category is a faculty from FEU-Tech.

The PAES TEA Board of Judges consists of Dr. Manuel Belino (Chair) ,  Dr. Romano Neyra (PAES President), Dr. Ricardo Pama (Commission on Higher Education TPET member), Prof. Alberto Laurito, (PAES Adviser and Dr. King Harold Recto (American Society for Engineering Schools - Philippine Branch).

DCE Faculty presents papers at the ICEE-Phil 2023

Dr. Andres Oreta and Ms. Jade Ching presented at a parallel session on CE and Engineering Education  at the ICEE-Phil 2023. Dr. Roxas (left) of DLSU MEM Dept. served as a session chair.

Faculty members from the Department of Civil Engineering presented papers on Engineering Education at the International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEE-Phil 2023) held on Nov 10-11, 2023 at UP Los Banos. ICEE-Phil is an annual event hosted and organized by the Philippine Association of Engineering Schools (PAES) where DLSU is a member and represented in the board by GCOE Dean Dr. Kathleen B. Aviso.

The paper entitled “Understanding Lateral Spreading Case Histories using Interpretable Machine Learning” by Engr. Emerzon S. Torres and Dr. Jonathan R. Dungca was chosen as a recipient of the Best Paper Award.

GEOMATE International Society in coordination with the Mie University Research Center for Environmental Load Reduction organized The Thirteenth International Conference on Geotechnique, Construction Materials and Environment, GEOMATE 2023, on November 14 – 17, 2023 at Tsu City, Mie, Japan. The conference aims to provide an opportunity to share research on geo-engineering, construction materials, environmental issues, water resources, and earthquake and tsunami disasters.

BSMS Student, Ryan Chan, Showcases Research at PRES23

 

From October 8 to 11, 2023, Mr. Ryan Sylvester Chan, a BSMS student, showcased his paper titled “Application of Multi-Criteria Decision-Making in the Design of a Post-Disaster Transitional Shelter” at the 26th Conference on Process Integration, Modelling, and Optimisation for Energy Saving and Pollution Reduction (PRES’23) in Thessaloniki, Greece. The paper, co-authored by Dr. Jason Maximino C. Ongpeng and Engr. Cheryl Lyne C. Roxas, falls within the topic of process integration for sustainable development.


For over 25 years, the PRES conferences have been at the forefront of discussing innovative solutions for efficient and sustainable industrial and regional systems. They address global challenges in energy, water, pollution, and sustainability. This year's conference included the presentation of over 100 research papers covering topics such as process analysis, modeling, optimization, sustainable processing and production, footprint minimization and mitigation, and energy-saving technologies. Notably, the conference was conducted through both onsite and virtual modes, enabling a diverse and extensive exchange of ideas and research findings.

MSCE Student presented in the 18th Quality in Research (QiR) International Conference in Bali, Indonesia


Universitas Indonesia (University of Indonesia) hosted the 18th Quality in Research (QiR) International Conference at Hilton Bali Resort, Bali, Indonesia, from October 23 to 24, 2023. This conference consists of a total of 71 parallel sessions covering various fields of expertise. The 3rd CSID AUN-SCUD International Conference on Sustainable Infrastructure and Urban Development (CAIC-SIUD) is a subsection of the 18th QiR, focusing on the following topics: Smart Built-Environment System for Urban Resilience, Innovation for Sustainable Infrastructure in disaster risk reduction and creative financing, Dams planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance for sustainable development, and Engineering education and research on ASEAN Development Studies.

During the event, Engr. Cris Angelo C. Fernandez, a research assistant, and a recent graduate of Master of Science in Civil Engineering at De La Salle University, presented the study titled “Road Blockage Probability Based on the Potential Debris Spread of Adjacent Structures.” The co-authors for this study are Engr. Rainier Lawrence A. Valdez and Dr. Lessandro Estelito O. Garciano.
