Bangkok, Thailand -
Twenty students of the De La Salle University (DLSU) participated in a 10-day
student exchange program in Bangkok, Thailand that took place between May 6 to
May 15 of this year. The first exchange program organized by the Civil Engineering
Department of DLSU and Chulalongkorn University (CU) in Bangkok was in
September 2012 and since then it has been an annual event thus strengthening
further the ties between the two universities. The students were accompanied by
four faculty members of DLSU, namely Dr. Erica Elice S. Uy, Engr. Daniel Nichol
R. Valerio, Engr. Maria Emilia P. Sevilla and Engr. Miller D. Cutora - three of
which are alumnis of CU. The purpose of the program was to immerse the students
into the culture of Thailand through educational and social experiences.
The first few days
of the program focused more on the cultural tour in the city whereby the
professors guided the students around the local’s usual places so that the
students could familiarize themselves during the 10-day stay in Bangkok. The
students were brought to enjoy places such as the Ancient City, Ayutthaya,
Asiatique, Baiyoke Sky Hotel, Grand Palace and Wat Pho - all of which were
popular areas for tourists alike.
Project
Site visit to Singhorn Village in Lumpini Park
On the fifth day of
the program, as led by a CU Assistant Professor Dr. Vachara Pheansupap, the
students went for a site visit to Singhorn Village in Lumpini Park, in which
the project was managed by Project Planning Services (PPS) - one of the leading
engineering service firms in Thailand. The site visit commenced with an
introduction to the project site, followed by an actual tour around the
construction site led by the project manager himself.

the Department of Civil Engineering building, Chulalongkorn University
By the seventh day
on May 13, the students went to CU campus for a 4-hour seminar in the morning.
The students were warmly welcomed by the Head of the Civil Department, Prof.
Dr. Teerapong Senjuntichai, as well as by professors Prof. Dr. Suched
Likitlersuang, Assist. Prof. Dr. Vachara Pheansupap and Assoc. Prof. Dr.
Tirawat Boonyatee. During the seminar, the students were briefed about the
civil engineering course in the university and the graduate programs and
scholarships being offered to foreign students. It was also during this time
that four students of DLSU and three CU graduate students presented their
research studies. Later in the afternoon, a laboratory tour took place and the
following laboratories were visited: geotechnical, CM laboratory, concrete
testing and material testing laboratory.

To end the student
exchange program on a high note, a Certificate of Appreciation was given to the
Civil Engineering Department of Chulalongkorn University for the accommodations
prepared for the students and faculty members of DLSU. The certificate was
given by Dr. Erica Elice S. Uy and Engr. Daniel Nichol R. Valerio to the Head
of the Civil Engineering Department of CU, Prof. Dr. Teerapong Senjuntichai.
Tokens of appreciation were also given to other Civil Engineering Professors of
CU.
