Technical Papers on Waste Utilization presented at IEEC2015 - South Korea

The 2015 International Environmental Engineering Conference (IEEC 2015) with the theme of “Creative Technologies for Environments”, organized by the Korean Society of Environmental Engineers (KSEE), was held last October 28 to 30, 2015 at Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (BEXCO), Busan, South Korea.

Five (5) ERDT scholars from two engineering schools in the Philippines, namely De La Salle University – Taft, Manila and Mapua Institute of Technology – Intramuros, Manila, participated in the conference. Two papers authored by DLSU alumni were presented during the parallel sessions.

 

Jeffrey Tepace

Jeffrey Tepace, BSMS CIV-CTM, and adviser Engr. Ronaldo Gallardo’s research entitled “Evaluation of Properties of Pervious Concrete with Fly Ash and Bottom Ash” was included in the session encompassing talks on Water Resources/Quality Control and Watershed Management – Occurrence and Treatment of Microorganisms (Session 04). The said research studied the effects of using fly ash as cement substitute in different percentages and bottom ash as total substitute for sand as fine aggregates on the different hydraulic and mechanical properties of a modified pervious concrete aimed to be used as part of a low-cost water filtration system for poor communities in the Philippines.

On the other hand, the paper entitled “The Assessment of Partially Saturated Copper Mine Tailing Upon Inundation” was presented by Miller Cutora, BSMS CIV-STE, co-authored with his adviser Dr. Mary Ann Adajar, on the session discussing novel materials and processes for waste reuse and recycle (Session 11). The said research assessed the hydrocompression behavior (response of particle thereupon sudden inundation) of copper mine tailing, a waste material from mining industry, when used as structural fill or embankment material in order to utilize the waste resource. It is evaluated with varying moisture content, relative density, and overburden stresses.

Campus and Lab Tour held for PLM CE Students

As part of the adopt an engineering school program of the Civil Engineering Research-Based Initiatives & Services (CERBIS), students from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), a premier scholars’ university, visited DLSU for a campus visit last October 9, 2015. The program aimed to promote the Masteral and Doctoral Programs of Civil Engineering that feature the following specializations, Structural Engineering, Construction Technology and Management Engineering, Transportation and Planning Engineering and Hydraulics and Water Resource Engineering. The specific objectives were:
1. To introduce the facilities featured in the distinct laboratories by engaging in a campus tour
2. To present the available technology in the campus that may be useful for further research in later studies
3. To expand the knowledge of the students in the field of engineering by demonstrating selected laboratory equipment and computer software

Students of the BSMS program were assigned to conduct the tour of each laboratory to fully explain the distinctive features of the laboratories. All Civil Engineering Laboratories namely, Structural, Hydraulics, Transportation, Geotechnical, Survey and Construction Materials were involved in the tour. This gave the PLM students an idea of the possible studies, which may be conducted for further studies. This can hopefully inspire the students to further their studies by taking up a masters and doctoral degree in the university.

OBE papers presented at ICEE-PHIL 2015

Dr. Alvin Chua, Dr. Rosemary Seva and Dr. Andy Oreta, authors of the paper on “Implementing an Outcomes-Based Quality Assurance Process for Program Level Assessment at DLSU Gokongwei College of Engineering.” 

GCOE Faculty members including Mr. Jason Ongpeng and Dr. Andres Oreta attended the International Conference on Engineering Teaching and Learning Innovation (ICEE-PHIL 2015) with the theme, “Facilitating Teaching and Learning Innovation in Engineering Education” organized by the Philippine Association of Engineering Schools, Inc. (PAES, Inc.), formerly PATE , held on October 22-23, 2015 at the B.G. Paredes, OP Ballroom, Alumni Center, University of Santo Tomas, Sampaloc, Manila.


Two papers on Outcomes-Based Education co-authored by Dr Oreta were presented during the parallel sessions. Daniel Valerio presented the paper, “Addressing a broad range of student outcomes in the course on Matrix Theory of Structures.”  Dr. Alvin Chua, on the other hand, presented the paper on “Implementing an Outcomes-Based Quality Assurance Process for Program Level Assessment at DLSU Gokongwei College of Engineering.”
