Cheryl Roxas completes her AUN-SEED/Net SRJP at Tokyo Tech

Assistant Professor Cheryl Lyne C. Roxas of the Construction Technology and Management division of DLSU Civil Engineering Department accomplished her Short-term Research Program in Japan (SRJP) under the  ASEAN University Network/ Southeast Asia Engineering Education Development Network (AUN/SEED-Net) supported by Japanese Government through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The SRJP is one of the important activities which enhance the educational and research capacities of member institutions. Engr. Roxas performed experimentations from 01-30 June 2015 on a research entitled “Investigation of Steel Corrosion in Concrete Mixed with Seawater due to Cracks and Cold-Joints” with Professor Nobuaki Otsuki from the Graduate School of Science and Engineering and Department of International Development, Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyotech), Japan as host professor.

Among the activities during the SRJP were:

      (a) Tour at Tokyotech’s Materials and Concrete
      (b) Laboratory and familiarization with  the carbonation chamber and corrosion acceleration chamber
      (c)  Research presentation
      (d) Preparation, casting and testing of fly ash mortar mixed with seawater specimens for compressive, flexural and corrosion tests (specimens were brought to the Philippines for further testing)

Several learnings, specifically, the divided steel set-up in measuring the macrocell corrosion current  and corrosion measurement were derived from this research activity. TokyoTech is very advanced in terms of laboratory facilities and equipment which are beneficial in conducting research efficiently. The new technology employed in the same university can also be adopted in DLSU or improvised to suit existing facilities. Several research topics on the utilization of fly ash and seawater as alternative materials for concrete can also be derived.
