Oreta attends PBEd-STRIDE Workshop

Dr. Andy Oreta, professor of civil engineering represented DLSU in the PBEd-STRIDE Curriculum Mapping Workshop for BS Civil Engineering on 27-28 April 2016 at The Tower Club in Makati City. There were ten invited academe representatives from DLSU, UPD, UPLB, TUP, MIT, MUST, UST, AdU, USC and BSU who participated in the workshop and provided inputs to the PBEd-STRIDE project. The objectives of the workshop were (a) to review and align the industry-defined outcomes for the civil engineering program, (b) to provide focus of instruction for faculty members, and (c) to establish a curriculum matrix between desired industry outcomes and the professional subjects.

The main output of the workshop is a matrix wherein professional subjects were identified that can address the industry-defined outcomes with respect to knowledge and ability. The industry-defined outcomes are grouped into three (A) Design  (B) Construction and (C) Basic CE Principles & Practices. The industry-defined outcomes listed below are what industry expects from a fresh CE graduate. A fresh civil engineering graduate or a newly-hired civil engineer must be able to:

A. Design
1. Interpret design specfication and criteria
2. Interpret codes
3. Interpret topographic maps
4. Interpret geotechnical reports
5. Calculate design loads
6. Analyze and design simple structures
7. Prepare basic drainage and site grading
8. Perform basic road design
9. Translate basic design to engineering sketches/preliminary drawings
10. Produce construction drawings from engineering sketches using CAD

B. Construction
1. Perform PERT-CPM for simple structures
2. Use project scheduling software
3. Prepare quantity estimates
4. Interpret project contract obligations and agreements
5. Identify construction equipment and tools
6. Identify construction materials
7. Recognize construction terminologies in the vernacular
8. Generate project S-curve on simple structures
9. Create rebar cutting list
10. Lay-out and stake simple plans
11. Distinguish common architectural finishes
12. Interpret material testing results
13. Verify actual construction works vs plans
14. Prepare accomplishment reports

C. Basic CE Principles and Practices
1. Organize project documents
2. Write technical reports
3. Read plans (i.e. architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical)
4. Implement 5S housekeeping
5. Interpret CE laws and ethics
6. Differentiate the six specializations (CTM, HWR, STE, TRE, GTE and ENV)
7. Practice basic safety

The industry-defined outcomes are very useful in upgrading the CE  curriculum especially in preparing the graduates for the real-world tasks.
