Community Outreach and CERBIS at Don Bosco Calauan, Laguna

The CE faculty, staff and students conducted a community outreach activity at Don Bosco Calauan, Laguna on 14 Aug 2016. The activity consists of two parts:
(1) Educational Program for the Kids on Emergency Awareness and Preparedness dubbed as "Bata, bata, Laging Handa sa Bawat Sakuna." This activity was hosted by Joenel Galupino and Erica Uy and were assisted by Em Sevilla and B3 Bernardo. The concept was devised by Dr. Andy Oreta. A disaster "lindol"  song, "May plano ba tayo?" was introduced to the kids. The kids also were given sheets of paper with disaster lessons to color. A disaster multiple choice game was also conducted.
(2) CERBIS site inspection was conducted on several houses by Jason Ongpeng, Maricel Paringit, Toni Kalaw, Jay Perez, Richard De Jesus and Mry Ann Adajar to detemine the needs of the community related to their dwellings. A proposal on the needs assessment will be prepared for the next phase of the outreach program.

CE Dept hold Faith Formation Seminar with Br. Michael, FSC

CE Faculty & staff strengthening their Lasallian spirituality at St. Scholastica's Retreat House, Tagaytay City

Certificate of Appreciation is given to the retreat facilitator, Br. Michael Broughton, FSC by Dean Dungca, Engr. Ongpeng (Dept. chair) and Dr. Garciano (GCOE EAD)
The CE Department faculty and staff attended a Faith Formation Seminar on the "Life of the Founder and Lasallian Spirituality" on August 5, 2016 at the St. Scholastica's Retreat House, Tagaytay City. Br. Michael Broughton, FSC (DLSU VP for Lasallian Mission) was the spiritual resource speaker.

Br. Michael shared his experience as a Lasallian brother in Singapore and in the Philippines and explained the five Lasallian principles (a) Faith in the presence of God, (b) Concern for the poor and social justice, (c) Quality education, (d) Respect for all persons, and (e) Inclusive community. These principles are hinged on the Lasallian core values (FSC): Faith, Service and Community. He also stressed the importance of these values and principles in one's job as a teacher or staff. Some memorable quotes from the seminar are listed below:
1. Jesus is both the messenger and the message.
2. God is love. Love created created us. Hence, We are from Love, We are of Love and We are for Love.
3. We are capable of great evil, but we are capable of greater good.
4. You express your love by caring for your students through your teaching.
5. Your students don't care how much you know until they know how much you care.
6. Self care is not optional. The quality of your work drops when you are not well.
7. Every teacher works for the success of the students just like God works for your success.
8. Dream big. Start small. Start now.

Paper on Environmental Impact of Bridges presented at SBE2016

Engr. Kevin Atienza (Right most) with his co-authors: M. Martinez, J. Joaquino, C. Gonzalez and Prof. Oreta

Last July 13-15, students, professionals, consultants, and members from the academe convened for the Sustainable Built Environment 2016 Conference held at the Acacia Hotel, Alabang, Muntinlupa City. The symposium showcased and discussed technical papers submitted by students and professionals in the field of engineering, architecture, landscape design, and urban and regional planning.

Engr. Kevin Lawrence M. Atienza, a civil engineering alumnus from De La Salle University, presented a paper entitled “A proposed methodology for quantifying the environmental impacts of the structural elements of standard bridge designs.” The study was an undergraduate thesis authored by the presenter together with Engr. Carla Maria B. Gonzalez, Engr. Jorge Jason K. Joaquino, and Engr. Mitchel Krisia R. Martinez under the advisory of Dr. Andres Winston C. Oreta.

The study discussed the integration of environmental impact assessment in engineering sustainable bridge designs. Using a Life Cycle Impact Assessment or LCIA, the authors were able to determine the potential environmental impacts produced by the extraction and manufacturing stages of a bridge. Ultimately, the study generated an Environmental Impact Score or EIS, a single-value index that indicates the environmental performance of a bridge.

The conference invited two keynote speakers, Dr. Yukio Tamura and Dr. Greg C. Foliente, for its master classes on wind engineering design and sustainable development. Hon. Mark A. Villar, secretary of the Department of Public Works and Highways, was also invited in the conference. Breakout sessions were also conducted, discussing topics on sustainable buildings, infrastructures, communities, and disaster risk management.
