Community Outreach at DHVCAT - STE Lectures

DLSU-Manila's Structural Engineering Division faculty members, Dr. Andres Oreta, Dr. Bernardo Lejano and Dr. Jonathan Dungca conducted Reinforcing Lectures on Seismic Analysis and Design of Structures at the Don Honorio Ventura College of Arts and Trades (DHVCAT), Bacolor, Pampanga last November 28, 2008. The following lectures were presented: Oreta on his photo-video presentations on "Understanding Earthquakes and Disasters," Lejano on "Seismic Forces on Buildings ," and Dungca on "Seismic Analysis of Bridges." They were welcomed by Engr. Reden Hernandez, Dean of DHVCAT's Institute of Science and Technology and Engr. Raul Duya, DHVCAT CE Dept. Chair. About 80 senior DHVCAT students attended the lectures. Incidentally, the DLSU ECE Department faculty also conducted lectures to the DHVCAT ECE students and faculty on the same date. activities are conducted in connection with the Adopt-an-Engineering-School Program of the DLSU College of Engineering.

Hydraulics Laboratory Exhibits - Developing Research, Model Making and Presentation Skills

T-shirt design to promote awareness on flooding

The Bulacan Flooding Exhibit

A student exhibit is an end-of-the-term project in the Hydraulics Laboratory when it was a two unit laboraotry course. These projects develop life-long learning and communication skills. Students do library, internet and field research, design their presentations and projects - posters and/or models and present orally their projects in front of a panel of judges.

In 2009, HYDRALA students, presented their projects related to the Typhoon Ondoy. Each group was assigned a  location in Metro Manila and vicinity for them to do research on the flood hazard, causes of flooding, extent of damage and recommended solutions to mitigate the flood risk. The group of Katrina Tengki and Earl De Guzman on flooding in Bulacan won the best project.





































In 2008, undergraduate students enrolled in the Hydraulics Laboratory created both working and non-working models related to Hydraulics and Water Resources (HWR) Engineering. The DLSU Civil Engineering Society (CES) sponsored a competion for the HWR models. The models were judged by the HWR professors – Dr. Danilo Terante and Dr. Renan Tanhueco and other CE Faculty Members. The 1st place winners in the competition were:
Non-Working Model: Hydro-Electric Power Plant by A. Viernes, D.J. Vidad, J. Feraer, K. Llamada, D. Llanes and E. Cheng.

Working Model: Pipe Network in a Subdivision by M. Gawaran, H. de Guia, M. Arigo and P. Adiaz.

The other working models which won 2nd and 3rd were the models on Flood Control (Flood Gates) and Overflow Spillway with Vertical Gate.

 

CES competes at MapuaTech CE Quiz

Third year DLSU Civil Engineering Society (CES) members participated at the 2nd Mapua Institute of Technology CE Quiz Contest last November 21, 2008. The participants were Morgan Say, Cheska del Castillo, Jet Tugado, El Rey Morales and Manuel Antonio Mayo. The CE quiz competition covers the various CE subjects including Mathematics (Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, Differential Equations), Engineering Economy, Engineering and Fluid Mechanics, Hydraulics, Surveying, Strength of Materials, Structural Analysis, Soil Mechanics and Structural Design (RC, Steel, Timber). Despite being handicapped since they have not yet taken any structural design subject, the DLSU participants gave a good performance. However they did not qualify to the top 10 and final round. ALUMNEWS: DLSU CIV alumnus is TokyoTech International Students’ Leader

George William Hong, DLSU-Manila CIV-CTM (ID 101) alumnus 2005 serves as the coordinator for the Tokyo Tech International Students Association, (TISA). He coordinates the main activities of TISA with the administration and initiates new activities to enhance students involvement and internationalization of TokyoTech. He is also one of the leaders of the TokyoTech Filipino Students. Among the activities organized by TISA are the welcome parties for foreign students and sports festivals. His experience during the undergraduate years at DLSU where he was the president of the Civil Engineering Society (CES) has develop his leadership qualities. William is a Japanese Government scholar presently pursuing his Master of Engineering course at the International Development Engineering Department - Prof. Otsuki Laboratory.

List of Students : CE Specialization SY 2008-2009

The CE Department announced the final groupings of the third year CIV students based on the four fields of specialization being offerred at DLSU. These four fields are Hydraulics and Water Resources (HWR) under Dr. Danilo Terante, Transportation Engineering (TRE) under Dr. Alexis Fillone, Construction Technology & Mgt (CTM) under Engr. Ronaldo Gallardo and Structural Engineering (STE) under Dr. Andres Oreta. Starting this 3rd term SY 2008-2009, the third year students will be assigned their corresponding degree codes as CIV-HWR, CIV-TRE, CIV-CTM and CIV-STE.

Prior to the final groupings, a CES specialization orientation was held on July 18, 2008 to promote the awareness of civil engineering students on the different specializations in civil engineering. Dr. Bernardo Lejano introduced the DLSU BSCE Specialization Program: Curriculum & Policies. On the other hand, the four fields of specialization were presented by CE faculty representatives - Renan Tanhueco (HWR), Dr. Fillone (TRE), Jason Ongpeng (CTM) and Dr, Oreta (STE).

AnimoSibil supports Green for Life

AnimoSibil, the De La Salle Alumni Association (DLSAA) – College of Engineering subchapter for Civil Engineering Alumni led by its president Jason Maximino Ongpeng, CE Department vice-chair, donated fifteen thousand pesos to the Lasallian Institute for the Environment (LIFE) and participated in the tree planting at Calatagan, Batangas in support of the Green for Life: One Million Trees and Beyond Project last September 6, 2008. Twenty four AnimoSibil alumni, student and faculty volunteers successfully planted 2,000 out of the total of 10,000 mangrove propagules planted on that day. DOST names Dungca in 50 Men & Women of Science

Dr. Jonathan Dungca, Associate Professor of the CE Department, was chosen by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) as one of the 50 Men and Women of Science after being recognized as an Outstanding DOST Scholar. Dr. Dungca was recognized "for his interests in the development of soil liquefaction potential maps and various techniques to assess the effects of soil liquefaction to structures." Dungca was a finalist in the 2008 Lasallian Excellence Awards-Students’ Search for Outstanding Teachers, and is a volunteer speaker and lecturer of the “Adopt-an-Engineering School Program” of DLSU-Manila, actively fostering relationships among Civil Engineering faculty and students in the University and in other schools. The 50 Men and Women of Science are the outstanding scientists who made it in the Top 10 list of the following categories: DOST Scholars, Researchers, Technology Adoptors, Science Educators, Science Communicators, and Administrators. For the Outstanding DOST Scholars, selection is based on the scholar’s accomplishments in science and technology, peer recognition, and national and international awards in science and technology. The announcement of the 50 Men and Women of Science was held in the Gabi ng Ginintuang Sinag: 50 years Celebration of DOST last June 9, 2008 at the UP Theater. (Reference: DLSU Newsletter 2401)

Undergraduate Thesis to be Presented at RSID6

The 6th Regional Symposium on Infrastructure Development (RSID6) in Civil Engineering to be held at Bangkok, Thailand on December 8-10, 2008 is a meeting ground for young researchers and engineers from the Philippines, Japan, Thailand and other Asian countries for discussing and exchanging experiences and ideas in order to promote advancement in civil engineering for infrastructure development in the Asian region. Abstracts of three undergraduate thesis including the Gold thesis by Chua and Tan-Afuan were submitted for oral presentation at the symposium. The titles of the papers are:

ASEP Struct-Whiz Winner & A.CONCEPT Papers

Winston G. Chua won first place in the 2nd STRUCT-WHIZ Challenge sponsored by the Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines, Inc. (ASEP) held at the University of Makati last May 22-23, 2008 during the ASEP Convention on Concrete Engineering Practice and Technology (A.CONCEPT). The STRUCT-WHIZ Challenge is the specialized Civil Engineering Quiz Competition in Structural Engineering. The topics of the quiz includes Engineering Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Structural Analysis, Structural Design (RC, Steel, Timber), Design Codes and Foundation Design. CE Dept graduates 1st Summa Cum Laude.

During the 4 Oct. 2008 graduation ceremony at the PICC, the Department of Civil Engineering had seven graduates with honors led by Alvin Christopher Varquez, the 1st Summa Cum Laude in BSCE since the program was revived at DLSU-Manila in 1987. Alvin Varquez also received the Jose Rizal Honors Society and Student Leadership awards. He was the president of the Civil Engineering Society during the SY2007-2008. The other honor graduates were Winston Chua (Magna Cum Laude), Allen Christian Varquez (Cum Laude) and Honorable Mentions - Michael Paolo Bellosillo, Chua Man Wai, Manuel Chito Borja, Maria Celina Suarez. The Hydraulics and Water Resources (HWR) division had the most number of honor graduates - Alvin Varquez, Chito Borja and Winston Chua, followed by the Structural Engineering (STE) Division - Bellosilo and Suarez. CTM (Chua Man Wai) and TRE (Allen Varquez) Divisions had one each. Meanwhile, Winston Chua and Andrew Tan-Afuan received the award for Outstanding Undergraduate Thesis in Civil Engineering. Last March 2007, the AnimoCIVnews was born. AnimoCIVnews is the official news digest of the Department of Civil Engineering, De La Salle Unviersity, Manila, Philippines. It is an annual report of the activities and accomplishments of the DLSU faculty, students and alumni. To provide instant news and get immediate feedback about the activities of the department, the AnimoCIVnews-Online is created.
